Dancing on the Water: The Inspiration Behind My Dragonfly Jewellery
Inspiration
There is a specific kind of stillness you only find at the edge of a pond in midsummer.
During my walks I often find tiny ponds. There are some hidden away near the old quarry on Blackwood Common and another up on Norland Moor. Then there are local nature reserves like Jerusalem Farm or the quiet corners of Cromwell Bottom. At any of these on a warm day I often find myself transfixed by the movement of dragonflies. They don't just fly; they dart and dance, their iridescent wings catching the light in a way that feels almost supernatural. A blue shimmer sparkling in the sunlight.
From the Banks to the Bench
When I return to my workshop, those "dancing" movements stay with me. In this piece I wanted to create a piece of jewellery that reminded me of these moments and which didn't just look like a dragonfly, but felt like the environment they inhabit.
In this Hallmarked Silver Dragonfly Pendant I used layers of textured silver to tell that story:
The Swirls: Representing the intricate ripples on the water’s surface as a damselfly touches down.
The Bubbles: A nod to the hidden life beneath the surface—the oxygen and energy of a healthy Yorkshire pond.
More Than Just an Insect
For me, these pieces are a celebration of summer days, but I know they hold a deeper meaning for many of you. Dragonflies are ancient symbols of transformation and rebirth. I’ve had many customers tell me that seeing a dragonfly feels like a sign that a loved one is nearby, watching over them.
Whether you wear one as a symbol of your own personal growth or as a reminder of a peaceful afternoon in the British countryside, I hope these handcrafted pieces bring a little bit of that lakeside magic into your everyday life.
